Sometimes I forget who I am and what I've done. I lose sight of myself. I think it's natural. In these moments I look back, sometimes at old photos in my phone, other times Sexplanations' videos. It is helpful to remember what I'm capable of and to cut myself some slack as my mind and body change.
Similarly to the episode of about Maia (just prior to this one), it is also rewarding to review what's out into the world and compare the lot, like "oh! that one was hard to shoot" or "that was so fun to write." It's fun to think about unique aspects that stick out for the almost 500 videos we've made.
Anyway, that is what this episode is. It is a collection of my votes for the most and least, best and worst. It's a way to remember and to inspire more sex edutainment in the future.

At 42 I’m struggling to see myself as sexual, or at least sexually appealing. This is in part because wrinkles and other marks of time aren’t often paired in society. The visibility of sexuality middle-aged and older is lacking. In this episode of Sexplanations my friend Elvis helped me increase visibility, connect with this unfamiliar aged Lindsey, and detach from social pressures to hide my changes or hibernate my sexuality. He literally showed me me through a new lens.

I've been wanting to educate about some of the more 'feeling' aspects of a menstrual cycle since I started bleeding from my vagina during puberty. There's a lot of valuable knowledge in understanding one's hormones, uterus, and fertility but the day-to-day emotions or body sensations often get left out of sex ed. And what is taught is rarely all-genders inclusive. Class is segregated. We're told about ovaries and blood collecting products then dismissed.
I wanted to make a more comprehensive rundown of the cycle, at least a version of it, with the caveat that everyone's body is unique.
Thankfully, many, many people on social media have offered their insights as well. It's like we were all craving a more informed public.

Backfire

Recently, a clip from the Sexplanations episode titled "Virtuous Pedophiles" was featured on the Twitter account Libs of TikTok. Within weeks, the post garnered 6.4 million views and triggered backlash from a mob that included doxxing threats, harassing calls to a sponsor, and severe online bullying aimed at shaming the message that individuals who experience pedophilia deserve access to resources to prevent acting on their paraphilia.

This episode of Sexplanations is a "thoughts from places" style narrative in which Dr. Doe shares her experience with widespread bullying. It also includes a second story about how an earlier attempt to derail sex education led to increased access to sex education for a much larger audience.

This video was originally a speech for one of the most well-known talk series at one of the most prestigious schools in the world.
I was invited to speak about “how to bring the field of sexuality closer to people, and the role that sex education can, or should, play in that process.”
Initially, I received a few minor edits to my speech and a green light to proceed.
A week later, I received a message that a board reviewed my writing and had provided me with 715 words outlining the ways I needed to “keep the sexual content low” in my talk about sex.
After a lot of thought, conversations with colleagues, and discomfort, I withdrew from the conference.

I think there are people who would have given Theodore of Oxfordshire a censored version, maybe even with a positive attitude that “something is better than nothing.”

That isn’t me.

I believe doing so would be acting in accordance with shame, perpetuating the very silence, misinformation, and disinformation that harm us.

Sexuality deserves the same open communication we afford music, chemistry, and geology. It deserves to be studied and learned. It deserves curiosity.

Almost Perfect Synthetic Foreskin

I met folks from Foregen at a conference many years ago and stayed in touch as we care about intactivism and the efforts to educate about the protective, sensual, and sexual value of foreskin or prepuce. A couple years ago they produced a very life-like model of the tissues removed during infant male circumcision in it's average adult dimensions and sent it to me. I finally had the opportunity to unbox and share it with you. This video. As you'll learn, there's only one thing that disappoints me about the piece, it's not a prosthetic. It looks and feels like real foreskin but my version isn't intended to attach and replace tissue on a circumcised penis. In very exciting news though, Foregen has wrapped up trials for a prosthetic version in sheep and they're recruiting participants for human trials! I am not neutral on this issue. If there is a medical necessity to remove foreskin or consent to have the surgery done on one's own body I do not object. Foreskin is a part of the penis just like it is a part of the clitoris and as my understanding, experience, and education stand at this time, systematically removing it harms the patient and their partners.

One Penis Policy Debate and Dialogue

The following video is a debate about the One Penis Policy and how it relates to gender, sex, monogamy, polyamory, insecurity, and control. OPP is typically viewed as a concession in open relationships between a man and a woman, wherein the woman may hookup with other partners so long as the other person doesn't have a penis. Or isn't a man. It's difficult to say what the rule is really trying to regulate and how much of it is personal vs. passed down through patriarchal and or misandric beliefs.

There are many additions to this debate, some of which have been added in the comments as the audience and I have dialogue about the personal considerations people make around their partner dynamics.

For the purpose of clarity, I use the terms cisguy or cisman to refer to a man who was assigned male at birth and has a penis. And transman refers to a man who was assigned female at birth and may or may not have a penis. If I use the term men it refers to cis /and/ transmen.

Do You Know These Gay Mexican Slang Words?

A few years ago I visited Puerto Vallarta and saw these beautiful cards made by Antonio Castellanos (https://www.joteriaoficial.com). They sparked my curiosity and an ambition to create an episode about the Mexican Q-munnity's language. Please note, while these are words and their meanings, like all communication, the context and intent are important. It may be appropriate and even loving for one person to use these terms; it may be inappropriate even cruel for another person to use them. Context and intent. Another thing to note is that words change or expand meaning. What is taught here may not hold up to the test of time. This episode was made across multiple years. I crowd sourced the effort to connect with the artist to get permission and I worked with many Mexican friends to strengthen my understanding of the language and the culture.

For example, I learned "Something that happens with the lottery is the clear use of the pronouns "el y ella" for he or she, usually in LGBT slang they are used without the pronoun. Not all terms come from a context free of violence; many of them are part of the misogynistic and reductionist culture. There is an author who talks a about this topic in one of his essays from the book "El laberinto de la soledad" where a lot emerges/comes from the rejection of everything that is women/feminine related. In the essay, for example, a very common phrase in Mexico is mentioned: "no te rajes" (don't back down), which is used to say "don't be a chicken" or be afraid to do something, but it refers to the "raja/corte" (slit/cut/line) of the vagina. So, "Rajarse" the conjugation of the verb “rajar” is related to the feminine spectrum, therefore, inferior, and some terms on the list suggest this same conceptualization/construction."

There have been times in my life when I was making nine videos a week, teaching at a university, running a private practice and a sexual health center, while raising kids and myself. Now I don't ever have that energy. My ambition is to keep teaching whenever possible but I have limitations. Which means, sometimes class is held at home on the couch and I share from my heart experiences rather than my research brain. This episode is just that. I've given a lot of my energy lately to rehabilitating the garbage dumps in my community, which are killing cows and cactuses, and to caring for seven rambunctious foster dogs. Dr. Doe, clinical sexologist and citizen of the planet.
This episode shares my experience with curating knowledge. As a middle-age woman I'm still collecting data, yes, but more of my focus, and I think this is the case for everyone actually, is on curation -- organizing the information we have. There are a raft of ways I do this in my personal and professional lives in general and with sexuality. Mainly starting with awareness of the how much and what kinds of information is out there and then choosing which to keep and which to let go of. It's an unscripted video made with very few spoons but I assure you, it is no less valuable if you can endure the wandering mind and wrestling puppies.

Even though she went to Mexico City, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world to attend the soft rock Bryan Adam's concert, she still managed to learn more about sexuality to share. This vlog-style episode captures her travel experience and the tendency we have to form exaggerated or falsely flattering ideas of each other's sexualities. Even though our intentions are usually kind and socially acceptable, the consequence is often confusion, trouble, and misunderstanding. This episode asks more questions than it answers, mainly to inspire a curious characterizing of each other or caricaturing as the analogy in the video story goes.
