We’ll cover not only prominent activists and differing movements, along with the tale of the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, the schism that occurred around the 14th and 15th Amendments, and the split between the Suffragists who wanted to work within legislative norms, and the militant Suffragettes who were happy to engage in riots, arson and even bombings.

Beasts and Bombs | Nebula Original

Discuss this episodes on the Nebula subreddit.

Sir John Hall, a conservative leaning, pro-women's suffrage MP, pushes open the doors to New Zealand’s Debating Chambers with an enormous scroll in his arms. He drops the fifteen-pound beast to the floor and kicks it open, sending it unfurling down the center of the room. Scrawled across these pages is 32,0000 signatures, nearly a quarter of the adult European women living in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, female activists known as Suffragettes begin to escalate their tactics in England. Embracing hunger strikes, bombings, and arson to force the issue into the public eye.

In 1869, the leaders of the American Equal Rights Association gathered for a meeting to discuss the fight for universal suffrage. Among the attendees, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, and Lucy Stone all believed in voting rights, but a new constitutional amendment is about to put that shared mission to the test. The proposed 15th Amendment would protect Black men’s right to vote, but it would not extend that right to women. Thus dividing the movement around equal rights and exposing divisions over race, gender, and the future of the Suffrage Movement.

In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott joined a group of women, largely Quakers and mostly abolitionists, who gathered at Seneca Falls, New York, to debate over, modify, and ultimately sign a statement to the world: The Declaration of Sentiments.

This statement was no mere open letter but a series of specific grievances against the legal and social inequalities women face and demanded be corrected. But, one demand was considered so radical that many of the women attending would refuse to support it. For the first time, the American Women’s Rights movement was setting its sights on one of the most controversial demands of all: obtaining the right to vote.
